Obituary of Catherine Carroll
Catherine Patricia "Cis" Carroll, 84, died September 1, 2017 after a long illness at the Chester, NJ home of her daughter, Catherine "Cathy" Carroll Colligan.
Born in Newark, NJ, Cis was the daughter of Mary (nee Hoyne) and Michael Aylward. She graduated from St. Charles Borromeo High School and worked at Carteret Saving Bank in Newark until she married her high school sweetheart Bartholomew Joseph, "Bart" Carroll and left for what she considered to be her most important job: motherhood.
Cis and Bart raised five children in a loving home in Hillside, NJ. Cis spent many hours at Little League, softball, soccer and basketball games, wrestling matches, school plays and dance recitals. She was always there to support her children and grandchildren with an eager smile and quick laugh. Cis was also an active member of St. Catherine's Parish in Hillside, NJ and a member of the Rosary Society. To Cis, family was all-important and Cis's family was an expansive one with a tight inner circle that included her mother, her Aunt Bridie, her sister Maureen, brother John, and especially her sister, Pat Clarke. Cis and Bart frequently vacationed with Pat, her husband, Jim and their combined families. Cis returned to the workforce once her children were older and she worked at Runnells Hospital in Berkeley Heights until her retirement in 1999.
Cis was a kind, patient, loving and devoted mother to her five surviving children: Daniel Carroll and his wife Mary, of Liberty Corner, NJ, Patrick Carroll and his wife Linda of Lopatcong, NJ, Cathy Carroll Colligan and her husband John, of Chester, NJ, Michael Carroll of Somerville, NJ and Mary Carroll Fanning and her husband, Edward, of Scotch Plains, NJ.
Cis was a beloved grandmother to nine grandchildren, Liam Carroll, Katie Carroll, Brendan Carroll, Meghan Carroll, Bridget Carroll, Brendan Fanning, Grace Fanning, Sean Fanning and Colin Fanning. Cis was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren, celebrating milestones or sharing stories and a cup of tea.
In her final years, Cis was cared for by her daughter Cathy.
Cis was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Maureen Aylward and Patricia Clarke, her brother, John Aylward, her aunt, Bridget Hoynes, and by her beloved husband of 57 years, Bartholomew J. Carroll, who died in 2012.
The family would like to thank caregivers June Taylor Gale and Kathy Lynam for providing Cis with extraordinary care, comfort and companionship during her illness. We would also like to thank the entire Robert Wood Johnson Visiting Nurse Association Health and Hospice team for all their support. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, https://www.lbda.org/donate, would be appreciated.
A Celebration of Cis's Life will include a visitation on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the William Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road (Corner of Rt. 206), Chester, NJ (908) 879-3090 from 4-8 p.m. A funeral mass will be conducted on Saturday September 9, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence R.C.
