Obituary of Odette Fortuna

Odette Fortuna (née Fave), 97, of Chester, NJ passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Merry Heart Nursing Home in Succasunna, NJ.  Odette was born on May 13, 1920 in Passavant-en-Argonne, France.  She met her husband, Frank Fortuna, in Paris, France in 1945 while he was serving with the US Army during WWII.  Odette moved to the United States in 1947.  She lived in Brooklyn, NY, Valley Stream, NY, Somers, NY, and West Palm Beach, Fl.  Upon moving to New Jersey, she lived at Fox Hills in Rockaway, NJ prior to entering the Nursing Home.  Odette was a retired French Teacher in the Berlitz School of Languages in New York City, where she taught for over 40 years.

Odette was extremely social, active and youthful and people were drawn to her.  She loved to entertain according to her French traditions.  Odette was actively involved with many clubs including knitting, choir, yoga and Zumba and continued to teach French.  She was very cultivated, enjoying art, traveling, music and she loved to attend the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she had a subscription for many years. 

Odette is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Marge) Salamone and her  husband Richard, her grandchildren, Cristina (Tina)  Salamone and husband Luis Izquierdo, and Nicolas (Nick) Salamone, her great- grandchildren, Daniel and Isabel, and many loving nieces and nephews both in France and in the United States.  She was predeceased by her husband Frank Fortuna in 2001, and her sister, Solange Pawlas in 2015.

A Celebration of Odette’s life will include a 11am funeral Mass on February 24, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Church, 8 West Main Street, Mendham, NJ.  Final interment will be private.
