Obituary of Shirlee Procopio

Mrs. Shirlee Procopio, 92 passed away peacefully after a long illness on July 9. 2017.  Dr. Frank Procopio, M.D., 95 passed away suddenly on July 10, 2017, just one day after losing the love of his life, Shirlee, after 72 years of marriage.

Shirlee Jane Abel was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on June 27, 1925.   She graduated from Appleton High School in June, 1943. She met her husband Frank while he was attending Marquette University School of Medicine and they married on April 28, 1945.  She had a wonderful marriage and partnership with her husband, Frank, for 72 years.  Shirlee was very active in the community, enjoyed playing golf, and played the violin in several community orchestras in central Pennsylvania.

Dr. Procopio was a pediatrician in the Harrisburg, PA area for more than 60 years, specializing in pediatrics and teenage medicine.  He was affiliated with Holy Spirit and Harrisburg Hospitals during his career, and served as first Chief of Pediatrics for Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA.

Dr. Procopio was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 15, 1921, and graduated from Boy’s High School in Brooklyn, NY.  He attended St. John’s University.  He received his medical degree from Marquette University School of Medicine.  He completed residencies at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jamaica, NY; Hahnermann University Hospital, Philadelphia; and Flower & Fifth Hospital, NYC.  Post-World War II, he served in the US Army Medical Corp in Heidelberg and Munich, Germany as a Captain.  While serving in the Army, he was the first pediatrician appointed to Valley Forge General Hospital.  In June 1952 he opened his practice in Harrisburg, PA, and later in Camp Hill, where he continued as sole practitioner until 1977, when he was joined by Guillermo Garcia, M.D., and Yoke Tan, M.D.

Besides his family, his two greatest loves were reading and playing golf.  He was a member of West Shore Country Club for more than 60 years.  He continued to play weekly up until his passing.

They are survived by three children; Shirlee Franson and her husband, William, Frank Procopio, and Barbara Procopio-Allen and her husband, Larry, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  They so adored spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family wants to personally thank all who were patients of Dr. Procopio for he loved nothing more than helping people, especially young people, live a happy and healthy life.  One of his greatest joys was seeing a young child, he provided health services to, grow and develop into a happy and successful adult.

Cremations were private.

A Memorial Mass for Shirlee and Dr. Frank will be held at the Chapel of Holy Spirit Hospital on Saturday, July 15 at 11am.  They will be committed together in a private ceremony in a family plot at Resurrection Cemetery in Harrisburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dr. Procopio’s memory may be made to the pediatric wing of Holy Spirit Hospital, 503 N. 21st Street, Camp Hill, PA 17011, attention Janet Weis.
