Obituary of Joseph Kowalczik
Joseph Kowalczik, 93, formerly of Herkimer, NY passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017. Joseph was born on July 26, 1924 and was a lifelong resident of Herkimer, NY. He was a plumber, worked in the power house and later was the Foreman of the Craft Shop for Remington Arms in Ilion, NY. He was a proud Navy veteran of WWII. Joseph graduated Herkimer High School in 1943 and attended Hartwick College after the war.
Joseph was a basketball player and played semi-professional basketball. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening. His garden was well known locally for his hot peppers. He was a member of Olive Branch Lodge #40 F&AM and was a past Master of former Herkimer Lodge #423 F&AM. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Herkimer. Joseph also founded the Depressions Boys Club. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 66 years, Jean Platner Kowalczik.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Barbara Misar and husband Steven, his son, David Alan Kowalczik and significant other Debbie Gross, his grandchildren, Kevin Misar and wife Kelly, Brian Misar and wife Catherine, and Darren Misar and wife Meghan, and his great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Connor, Caroline and Fiona. He is also survived by and was extremely close to his beloved nephew John Kowalczik and wife Sharon of Ilion and their children and grandchildren. John and Sharon's son Jamie and wife Justina and daughter Kirsten were especially kind and the family would like to thank them all for their loving help and support over the years. He is also survived by another beloved nephew, Peter Kowalczik and wife Cheryl of Dallas, Texas and their sons, and by a beloved niece, Patricia Diehl of Denver, Colorado and her son, Matthew and wife Christine and children. The family would also like to especially thank Ronnie Dauback of Herkimer who provided so much more than just housekeeping and support in every way. It was because of her care that Joe was able to stay in his own home almost until the end of his life.
A memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Herkimer, NY and burial at Church Street Cemetery in Little Falls, NY will occur in the spring.
