Margaret Elfner

Obituary of Margaret C. Elfner

Elfner, Margaret C., Long Valley.

Margaret C. Elfner, 94, peacefully entered into eternal life on April 18, 2021, at home surrounded by her family. Margaret was the daughter of the late Stewart and Christine Turnbull, and the beloved wife for 52 years of Walter J. Elfner, who passed away in 2001. She was the proud mother of Janet M. Walsh of Long Valley and Douglas W. Elfner of Clifton Park, NY; mother-in-law of Martin Walsh and Gale H. Elfner; cherished grandmother of Matthew Elfner (Desiree) of Clifton Park, NY, Lauren Elfner, Esq. of Washington D.C., Erin Walsh of Long Valley; and great-grandmother of Stella Elfner of Clifton Park, NY.

She loved God, her family, and her friends. She was a faithful member and volunteer at Bethany United Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield, where she established and managed the church library and served as Sunday school Superintendent and Sunday school pianist. At Forked River Presbyterian Church, she served in numerous capacities, including teaching Sunday school and vacation bible school, as well as sewing choir robes, costumes, and quilts. Most recently, at Breakpoint Community Church in Hackettstown, she volunteered for many years in the nursery. She also supported numerous charities, including by making more than 100 baby quilts for Care Net in Hackettstown.

Raised in Newark, NJ, she graduated high school at age 16 after skipping two grades. She worked in a bank as a teller and became a bank manager, later relinquishing her job when men returned from World War II. She and her husband raised their family in Bloomfield, where she worked as a scientific librarian at Hoffman LaRoche. She was a cancer and Covid-19 survivor.

Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, participating in church worship, playing piano, sewing, and quilting. She was an avid reader and lifelong learner and relished finding new authors to enjoy. Memories of her mischievous spirit, quick wit, and strength will be cherished, and her boundless love and support will be greatly missed. A celebration of Margaret's life will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Breakpoint Community Church of Hackettstown, supporting their mission work.
