Obituary of George L. Ruzicka

George L. Ruzicka, 86, of Chester, NJ passed away on March 2, 2009. He was born on June 29, 1923 to the late Alois (Louis) Ruzicka and the late Emily Novak Ruzicka in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. George lived in Chester since 1972 and previously lived in East Hanover, and Marlboro, NJ. In 1946 he was one of the nine first employees at RCA involved with the birth of television. From 1951, at Bell Laboratories in Whippany, then Holmdel, then Chester, NJ he developed communications technologies. In 1953 he was instrumental in developing the transistor. In 1959 he was working on America's first phone communication satellite, Telstar, a joint effort with Britain. He was a radar specialist who worked on the Dewline, an early warning missile defense system, and other groundbreaking technologies. He was an Army Staff Sergeant Signal Corps Specialist with Radar units during WWII; also taught the new radar to commissioned officers. At age 13 he was one of the youngest Ham Radio operators. In the 1950's he was the Civil Defense Director for Morris County and surrounds. George was a member of Grace Bible Chapel in Chester, and the Chester American Legion. Also a longtime volunteer for the VNA of Somerset County, an avid worker for the Republican party, and had a lifelong passion for America and her freedoms. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Carly Jane Ruzicka; Brother, Walter Ruzicka. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Antoinette Ruzicka; Daughter, Marcia Marcantonio and husband Harry Lippe of Saylorsburg, PA; son, Steven Ruzicka and his wife Annie of Blairstown, NJ; Brother, Eric Ruzicka of Spring Hill, FL; Grandchildren, Tony Marcantonio and Niki Gunning and Jesse, Brandy, and Ashley Ruzicka; three great grandchildren, and his beloved cat, Patton. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 furnace Rd. (corner of rt. 206), Chester, NJ. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester following the funeral service.
